Gay Wedding Institute Certification

Gay Wedding Institute Certification

Being a member of the Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Specialists Association has its perks!  Special events are planned for members that are tailored to our specialties and focus:  luxury and romance travel.  Last week, the Gay Wedding Institute by 14 Stories partnered with DWHSA for a small, member-only certification course in Cancun, Mexico at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso.  There was 30 travel professionals that went through 3 days of on-site and hands-on training for this certification.  In a time where same-sex marriage remains a hot button issue, A Day to Remember Wedding Services wants to remain at the forefront of this movement and be a resource for couples in the Evansville, IN, and Tri-State area that are searching for a local wedding officiant for their ceremony, or that wants to have a destination wedding, and want to feel comfortable with whom they are planning this event.

Bernadette Smith, the founder of 14 Stories, led the certification course herself.  She was amazing!  Fabulous presenter, very down-to-earth, and she made the course interactive.  A variety of topics was touched upon:  the USA’s current stance on LGBT issues, anti-discrimination laws, countries outside of the US and their stance on same-sex marriage, etc.  The purpose of the certification is not just for the certificate, it’s for the training.  The knowledge of being an LGBT ally, and how to let our couples know that we welcome anyone, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.

While I was staying at Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso I also got to tour the property and spend time with the on-site wedding coordinators.  Earlier this year the Mexican government legalized same-sex marriage in the state of Quintana Roo, which is a huge step forward for couples that want to have a destination wedding.  I will be writing another article specifically on this topic and putting it on our travel agency’s website, which you can click on here to read.  As always, if there any questions you can contact us here or call in the office at 812-962-3841.
